If the kitchen is the heart of a home, then the dining room celebrates a hearty welcome to those you love. There are many styles and materials to choose from when it comes to a dining table. Concerning such heavy used items as dining tables and chairs it is important to go with something that will serve you faithfully and won't break or split in a year or two. A solid wood dining table with a good finish on it will serve you through the bumps and knocks of a busy family life and become your heirloom years later. So, the table should be durable, well-built and have a quality finish. It should fit your space and home decor as well. Selecting an ideal table can be simple if you know a few secrets.

When you begin thinking about a new wood dining table, the first thing to consider is the size and style of your dining room. The table will likely be the most dominant piece of furniture in the room, but if you have other furniture like sideboards or china cabinets that you are attached to then you will want to pick a table that matches. One important consideration is to get one made of the same kind of wood as your other furniture. Cherry, maple and oak are popular and beautiful choices. All these woods come in a variety of different colors. The wood itself can vary in color and the stain or varnish used on the table can also affect the color.

Style is another consideration to keep in mind when you are shopping for a solid wood table for your dining room because it should match with the rest of the decorations in the room at the very least. If you have any favorite accessories such as a china cabinet or sideboard which you want to keep in the same room as your table for dining, make sure they do not contradict with one another.

They are also much heavier than the wooden tables and are not extendable to serve more guests. This gets them less practical if you want to entertain big groups of people in your home. The look they add to the dining room is very unique overall though.

The glass dining table has a sleek contemporary look that adds a modern touch to any dining area. These usually come with beveled edges and can be matched with a wide variety of chair sets to make any dining room look like it is right out of a magazine. The base for most of these is metal, but there is more than one style with a plate glass base as well.

The shape of your dining area matters. Square and round tables make dining more intimate. They sit people cosily, and are space-savers in a small dining room. When it comes to planning a larger gathering, rectangular and oval tables are an ideal solution. The tables with such tops sit small and big numbers equally comfortable. They are great for casual dining but look formal enough to entertain more official guests.
